Humble House

I believe in intentionally making our lives more fun and enriching and to do that, sometimes it takes some planning and effort. Saturday evening saw us having a nice dinner at Humble House before we catch a ballet performance. This place serves Chinese food with a fusion twist to it, complemented with avant garde furniture.

All the dishes and menus at HH has very poetic names. The set menu that we took was named "The Wind Wafts Over My Shoulder".

First dish: Delightful Dew. Instead of the usual foie gras that anchors the opening dish, we had grilled Australian oyster with French Wasabi, Japanese Teriyaki and Vinegar Sauce.

2nd dish: The Heart of Soul. Braised pumpkin broth with chicken mousse and bird's nest. Frankly, this is the first time I'm eating bird's nest hot and savoury. On its own, the bird's nest is tasteless but to have it with the pumpkin broth, it is quite a refreshing change. As for the chicken mousse, the taste of the chicken was not obvious. I thought it was more potato than chicken.

3rd dish: Sensous Comfort. Poached wild sea fish ball in chicken broth. This was my favourite dish in the menu. I am a fish person and the fish served is fresh and tangy to the bite. But what seals the deal was the broth. It was thick, delicious and not at all salty. I can have 2 servings of it any time :)

4th dish: Ocean Sunshine. Oven-baked lobster with cheese and cream. Let's face it. This is no Boston lobster and initially we thought the cheese and cream would be overpowering but it is not. The only cheena thing about this dish were the two strands of 'xiao bai cai' at the side. Otherwise, from the way it is cooked, it's obviously quite western.

5th dish: Unexpected. Stir-fried rice with diced smoke duck on lotus leaf. It was really unexpected, an unexpectedly huge portion of carbohydrates. The crispy rice bits sprinkled all over the rice gives this dish a very nice crunchy feel in the mouth. It was a well-executed dish but really, I could only finish half of it. I was really stuffed with this amount of carbs.

But no matter how full one is, we always have stomach for dessert, n'est pas? The final dish: Tropical Sunset. Herbal gelo accompanied with lychee sorbet. Ok, the ice-cream on top definitely tastes more spearmint than lychee sorbet. Not that I'm complaining though. I though the spearmint was cool and refreshing. Never had liked a dessert more. And the evidence, even though I was more than full, I polished off the entire serving!

Conclusion: It's worth giving HH a try. It may help you see Chinese food in a new light. Although it is the fine dining arm of Tung Lok, I must say the prices are not that fine dining though it is definitely not humble and the place can get a little noisy with large groups of people. Next up, Coppelia. Stay tune!
