Teochew-Style Steamed Pomfret

If you are a fish lover with a palate for steamed dishes, you will love this recipe. I am half Teochew and I grew up eating Teochew food and this is by far one of my favourite Teochew dish of all times. It's hassle-free and has high nutritious value. It is my pleasure to share my not-so-secret recipe with all.

Ingredients:
1 Pomfret
1 tomato
2 sour plums
ginger
dried chinese mushrooms (optional)
salt, pepper, sesame oil and light soya sauce to taste

Preparation time: 5 mins
1. Season the pomfret with salt and pepper on both sides.
2. Cut the tomato into 8 slices and placed it on/around the fish.
3. Slice the ginger into thin slices. There is no set amount to add. But because I love ginger, I tend to have too much in my dish.
4. Add 2 pieces of sour plums.
5. Add some sesame oil and small amount of soya sauce.
6. Add 2 to 3 teaspoon of water.

Cooking time: 10 mins
Depends on the size of the fish. But generally speaking, 10 mins will suffice. To test if the fish is ready, poke a chopstick in the middle of the fish. If the chopsticks come out clean and the meat inside looks white, then it's ready. Tip: before you put the fish in to steam, remember to have boiling hot water in the wok first. Then, turn down the fire from high to medium. This will prevent the fish from being over-steamed.

This is how the fish looks when it's cooked. I like this dish because it requires little effort but yet tastes great. Good news for those superwoman amongst us who wants a nutritious dinner but has no time to cook. Tis, by the way, is my dinner tonight! Do try out this dish when you are free and bon appetit!
