Another thing we did over the long weekend - watch this widely acclaimed film. A refreshing change from the usual dainty and sweet princesses Disney always have. This one here shows girls can do what boys are traditionally good at and it defies all the ideas one has of a proper princess. I suspect the script writer must be a real hardcore feminist. Afterall, all the men/boys in the film (except for the King) are such wimps. A very good film to watch/show during Mother's Day. Reminds us all of the wisdom of our mum, no matter how irritating they may be at times.
On the other hand, I came across a critic of the movie days ago and the writer, being a female herself, thinks this fim is derogatory to all females out there. E.g. why must it be the MUM who is unreasonable and demanding and worse of all, be turned into a monstrous creature. Talk about the symbolism in film. And how demeaning it was to show the princess having to marry and choose one of those clan wimps who cannot be compared to her at all.
It is interesting that I never quite saw the film as such - anti-feminist. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Afterall, there are many branches and off-shoots of feminism and they can defer from one another quite a fair bit. Sometimes I think we should just enjoy the show, enjoy the day off, enjoy the company of our loved ones and not think too much. The perils of being an intelligent woman. Humpf!
