After I visited Bangkok in September 2013, I finally understood why so many Singaporeans were in love with Bangkok. Regardless of your budget, it is a city that has everything for everyone. When my mil suggested yet another family holiday end of last year, I suggested Bangkok immediately.
And because of that, we found ourselves back at our favourite address in the Land of Smiles - St. Regis BKK.
As usual, the rooms were impeccable, coffee and biscuits delicious and my favourite part of any hotels? Twin basins in the bathroom.
Besides sharing with the in-laws our usual haunts, we also tried out new restaurants this time round. I have excluded those I didn't find fantastic - including the much raved about Mr Jones' Orphanage.
However, when you are in Bangkok, do take the time to visit Nara - a restaurant that serves local thai cuisine at expat prices. I love the tom yam goong here. The balance between spicy and sour is just right for me.
Another notable dish that we ordered for dinner was the deep friend sweet and sour fish. Can't remember what fish that was but it was fresh and nicely fried.
Since my last trip to BKK, I fell in love with mango sticky rice. We shared this among the 5 of us. Although it was not the best I tasted, it was decent enough to recommend it. I guess, the problem lies with the mangoes. If it had been sweeter, it would have been perfect. Still, I would say it is 3.5 out of 5 stars.
JoJo, the hotel's italian restaurant at the ground level deserves special mention. We were there for lunch one afternoon and we were bowled over by the quality of the food. Like many italian restaurants, we were first served some bread. While the bread was not spectacular, the olive oil and balsamic vinegar that came along with it was divine. The wait staff told us that the chef had blended the olive oil with chili padi to infuse some local characteristics. It was so good I had to stop myself from gorging on bread with oil. Haha.
I had been craving for squid ink pasta and got my wish when I saw it in the menu. My pasta came with chunks of lobster and every mouthful of it was so satisfying. It was better than many of the pasta I had in Rome when holidaying there.
JoJo is definitely worth a try when you in Bangkok, especially if you have any special occasion to celebrate!
Ending this much belated post (this trip took place in December 2014!) with a sun set view taken at the poolside. I always thought there was something so unspeakably romantic about sun sets.
