Journey to the East

We hardly venture to the East but made an exception this Sunday. I have always wanted to check out this small and quaint cafe and finally carved out time for this mini exploration. The Coastal Settlement definitely exudes the old-school vibes with all their antique typewriters, old cupboards and mantel pieces; their ceilings are decorated with old window grilles and door frames. But what I like most is the greenery that surrounds the place. Because of the big glass windows, sunlight streamed in generously from the outside.

Another thing to add to the quaintness and uniqueness of the cafe: you can help yourself to some of these nicely packed old-school biscuits located at the counter. How sweet and thoughtful of the owners. Reminds me of the Majestic Hotel in Malacca!

We were there for brunch. I wanted to try their famous crayfish laksa initially but they only serve that later in the day. So, we ended up trying another of their highly recommended dish - fried portobello mushrooms! Looks rather dry and crispy on the outside but it was oozing 'juice' the moment you put it into your mouth. Accompanied with a little mayonnaise on the side, the taste was sublime! For those mushroom lovers out there, this dish is a must-try!

For mains, we had the grilled baby snapper. It was actually quite a big fish and is more than enough for the two of us. The grilled snapper was cooked to perfection with the meat tender and the fish extremely fresh. It was seasoned with fresh herbs such as bay leaves and rosemary and thyme. It comes with a side dish of fried kangkong and some rice. Condiments include the very local 'chinchalok' (mini shrimp paste) and chili padi with dark soy sauce.

The Coastal Settlement is a good place to while away your time on a lazy Sunday afternoon. If you don't mind the heat, you can bask in the sun with a cup of latte and a book in hand but for now, I would rather park myself in the air-conditioned indoor cafe looking at people bake in the sun. Have a great week ahead! Ciao.
