In the mood for cheongsam

I spent the whole afternoon at the National Museum for the exhibition on cheongsam. It was an interesting topic as I discover how the cheongsam's rise and fall are often associated with politics. During the May Fourth Revolution in China, women marched to the streets in their cheongsam to fight for gender equality. In early 20th century Singapore, the cheongsam was worn by women of prominent families as well as white-collar workers such as teachers. It is an elitist garment, favoured especially by the educated and sophisticated. Over the years, the popularity of cheongsam has fallen due to the large influx of mass market, affordable garments from all over the world. Moreover, the cheongsam is now seen to be too restrictive in movement for the ladies, with the nip in the waist and the tight fitting cut.

Cheongsams over the decades: the earliest cheongsams look huge and unappealing due to the thick cotton lining underneath the garment to keep the ladies warm in winter.

In the 1950s-60s: Cheongsams are designed with a tighter fit. Inspired by Dior's "New Look" philosophy. It is also a time when the Chinese/ Asians were influenced by western ideals.

1990s to present: A new breed of cheongsam supporters. A showcase of cheongsams worn by the First Ladies of Singapore, as well as Mrs Lee Kuan Yew.

I have always adored the cheongsams. For me, it is the epitome of femininity as well as of poise and elegance. And the exact reason why I chose to wear the cheongsam for the lunch reception of my wedding. This bespoke piece is by the atelier of Kevin Seah, an outstanding local designer. He understood my needs and has a keen eye for design. To facilitate our first dance, he has designed this cheongsam with a flare bottom. I like my cheongsams in Thai Silk and this piece has french lace as well as hand sewn swaorski crystals added to it. The price tag of any custom made cheongsam is high but it is worth every cent because you can be sure that the garment will be able to stand the test of time.

Definitely a memorable piece for one of the most important and memorable event of my life.
