Date Night

We attended the opening night of A Chorus Line @ MBS on Friday. Both of us made an effort to come home earlier than usual to prepare for our date night. So before the show, we had a good dinner at HY California where Japanese food meets America's "Sunshine Coast". Hide Yamamoto's newest restaurant is Japanese at heart with a fun californian twist, and that is why you see tiramisu and salad with genovese dressing in my bento box.

A Chorus Line is a simple musical with quite a bit of adult content. The 'stories' of the actors and actresses were real-life stories based on interviews done with real Broadway dancers in the 1930s, the period where Broadway was at the brink of dying due to the extremely dire economic situation then. The musical reminds me of the mask everyone puts on at work and with friends. People always say rosy and nice things about themselves and only when you dig deeper will you realize that everyone has their own set of insecurities, disappointments and worries. It is also interesting to see how all these individuals started out wanting to shine to be selected for the role to actually become no one. At the end of the show, all the dancers came out dressed uniformly, dancing the same steps. No one is singled out as a star performer, no one is recognised as a particularly good dancer, no prima donnas. Just like how I used to tell my band kids, "One Band, One Sound"; there is no star player, only a star band.
