Don Quixote

After so many months of waiting, the Mariinsky Ballet has finally arrived on our shores. This widely acclaimed ballet performance really lived up to its name. Unlike most classical ballet, this performance is at times hilarious and it never fails to engage its audience. Instead of complete silence and a theatre full of straight-faced audience, one can occasionally hear giggles and chuckles. A prove that everyone truly enjoyed themselves! The set was very well designed and props interesting (they even have 2 real horses as props!).

Drawn from Cervantes's iconic novel set in 16th century Spain, Don Quixote is a tale of an old knight, Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza who go on a quest for chivalric ideals where they encountered star-crossed lovers, Kitri and Basilio. In the audience, we were enthralled by virtuosic dancing and unforgettable performances, from the breathtaking solos to energetic gypsy dances, from the captivating dance sequence to the thrilling pas de deux in the wedding finale. Having said that, I felt that the last act of the wedding scene, where it is just solo after solo, a little long drawn and failed to deliver the oomph expected of a climax and finale.
